WINTER ON LOCH NESS

If you are visiting Scotland over the next couple of months, don’t let the idea of harsh highland winters put you off activities involving the great outdoors. Venture out and you will be rewarded with some of the most breathtaking scenery, and by choosing one of the tours with Jacobite, you can travel in style, comfort and warmth!

During the winter months the scenery can change dramatically on a daily basis, just take a look at some of the accompanying photos taken by our crew in December and January to see the contrasts. On cool, crisp days, it may feel a little nippy on your fingers but the loch can be flat calm without a breath of wind. The setting sun in the West transforms the sky into a paint pot of colours while the moon rises above the village of Dores. The loch can also appear very dark and mysterious as you watch the ominous skies rolling up the loch, with the sun piercing through the clouds. Or when the low lying morning mist rises lazily from the surface of the water and gives the castle the appearance of floating in mid-air. Recently we have had a thick blanket of snow turning the surrounding hills, and our boats, into a winter wonderland. Of course if you prefer a little excitement we do get our fair share of more extreme weather, choose a day with a strong South Westerly wind for a wee bit of white water.

So why not join us in February and March, the tours are quieter giving you more room to move around, and you can choose to stand outside to view the stunning scenery, or sit comfortably in the heated saloon. In fact why not take the example of these 3 ladies from Texas, Linda, Linda and Sharon who braved the chilly air for the views and photographs, then came inside for some Highland Winter Warming in the form of one of our local brews - Nessie Monster Mash Ale!!

You certainly have a way with words! You described our experience perfectly, and your vivid description of the loch, castle and surrounding scenery took me right back to the great time we had with you (and Nessie) on the water!
