Environmental Commitment

Green Tourism BusinessAt Jacobite, the beauty of our natural environment is an integral part of our visitor experience. Therefore we encourage the conservation of our natural resources and promote effective environmental management procedures throughout the company.

  • Jacobite Cruises will meet or exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the company and has all required measures in place to prevent pollution. 
  • We aim to minimise waste and energy consumption by continuous environmental improvement in all aspects of operations.
  • We promote environmental awareness as part of our staff training and induction.
  • Jacobite Cruises uses local and Fair Trade products wherever possible in order to minimize the environmental impact of both production and distribution.
  • We promote energy saving and recycling amonst our customers, staff and suppliers.
  • Jacobite Cruises uses Visit Scotland's accredited Green Tourism Business Scheme to monitor environmental performance and standards.

Our Aims and Objectives

  • Ensure that computers, monitors and printers are switched off overnight

  • Use of Fair Trade products wherever possible. Fair Trade products ensure that disadvantaged producers in developing countries get a fair deal for their products. For details, please visit www.fairtrade.org

  • Use of 100% recycled paper for office and brochures

  • Minimise pollution by using biodegradable and environmentally friendly cleaning products

  • Provision of coach car park to encourage group transport

  • Provide details of public transport on our website and brochure

  • Prevent unnecessary use of private cars by providing staff transport to Clansman Harbour

  • Minimise waste by recycling paper, ink cartridges and old mobile phones

  • Reduce the use of paper by using e-mail instead of letters or fax

  • Save water by using non-drinking water for toilets on board our vessels

  • Provide spillage kits near fuel stores to prevent pollution

  • UV-system used to treat water supply at Clansman Harbour

     

Supporting the local environment

  • We encourage local wildlife by providing bird boxes and a feeding station at the Clansman Harbour and Tomnahurich Bridge

  • A beech hedge and lavender planted at Tomnahurich Bridge to provide living space for insects and birds

  • Encourage the use of local food and drink producers

  • Promote energy saving and recycling among staff at work and at home

    Reduce, Reuse, Recyle

    Please do not litter, there are general waste bins, cigarette bins and recycling bins provided on our boats and jetties.  Try and recycle any waste you have and say no to that extra carrier bag!
     

    Support Local Businesses

    Use local products and services, they give you a flavour of the area and support local communities.  Jacobite is committed to using Scottish products wherever possible.
     

    Be Water Wise

    Turn of the tap after washing your hands and please report any leaks to our staff.
     

    Support Green Tourism

    There are hundreds of businesses showing their commitment to the environment through the Green Tourism Business Scheme.  Look for a Green Tourism business when booking accommodation or visiting attractions.  See www.green-tourism.co.uk for more information.

     

    Supporting Local Charities

    We support a wide variety of charites, each of which are chosen by our staff on an annual basis.
    This year (2010-2011) we are pleased to be supporting the Highland Hospice, the only local hospice serving adults with incurable life-limiting disease in the Highlands of Scotland.  It is acknowledged as the centre of specialist paliative care expertise in the region and currently provieds a 10 bed In-Patient Unit in Inverness and Day Hospice on the same site.  
  • Over the past few years we have supported;
  • 2007-2008:   Inverness Sea Cadets.  Funds raised totalled £1750
  • 2008-2009:   RNLI.  Funds raised totalled £2500
  • 2009-2010:  Highland Hospice.  Funds raised totalled £1600

    In addition, several of our staff have been sponsored by Jacobite to undertake volunteer projects abroad, providing valuable skills which these countries would normally struggle to afford.
  • In February 2009, Jennifer travelled to Guatemala to help in an orphanage for autistic kids.
  • In February 2010, Lorna travelled to Zanzibar to teach local kids English.
  • In February 2011, Ali is going to Cambodia  to teach music/sport to kids in an orphanage.

    We also offer family vouchers for charity raffles and auctions etc.  The total value of vouchers given out each year is detailed below.
