Loch Ness with Jacobite

A history of cruising on Loch Ness

Welcome to Loch Ness and the Story of Jacobite

In 2015, Jacobite Cruises celebrated 40 years of operation on Loch Ness. Over that period, the company, which trades as Loch Ness by Jacobite, has evolved under three owners, each with their own unique style, to become the premier cruise operator on the loch.

In 2014, we revealed the wonders of Loch Ness to 175,000 clients, of whom 165,000 sailed on our ships. So far as we can ascertain, this represents more passengers than any other operator has ever carried on Loch Ness in the course of any previous year, even during the late Victorian and Edwardian heyday of Highland tourism.

For some time I had thought it would be useful to have a history of the company written down while there are still enough people around who can remember the early days. As I pondered this, I happened to meet Roy Pedersen on a London to Inverness plane and in the course of our conversation he expressed his interest in writing such a history. The rest, as they say, is history.

This well-written and thoroughly researched book, first published in 2007 and now in its second and updated edition, makes a fascinating and at times amusing read for anyone who has experienced the beauty of cruising on Loch Ness and who might be interested in learning about the characters and stories behind the formation and development of the company.

And there are the ships and vehicles, too, without which there would be no Jacobite on Loch Ness. These are described and a fleet list with vessel and vehicle specifications is appended.

We are very proud of the quality of experience that the company is able to provide to our guests and are always ready to welcome you aboard. In the meantime, I hope this book will whet your appetite for a cruise or bring back fond memories of the wonderful waterway that it is our privilege to frequent.
