Loch Ness with Jacobite

A history of cruising on Loch Ness

This account of Jacobite Cruises, the award-winning cruise and tour operator on and around the magical waters of Loch Ness and the Caledonian Canal, is the second and updated version of the original edition first published in 2007. The company's vessels and coaches are now almost as familiar and well-loved local and international icons as the legendary loch itself.

Powered navigation on the Caledonian Canal and Loch Ness dates back to the early dawn of the steam ship – 1820 in fact – and it has a long and absorbing history. After the Second World War, however, the old order had gone and opportunities to enjoy cruising on the loch were limited.

That all changed with the establishment in 1975 of Jacobite Cruises by Inverness quarry master, the late Dan MacWilliam.

Over the ensuing decades Jacobite has evolved to provide a five-star range of cruising and touring experiences all done with a refreshingly old-fashioned courtesy, well up to and surpassing the standard of the Edwardian glory days.

This volume sets out the history of the company. But this is no ordinary company history: it is set in the context of a stunning natural environment and a wider historical background redolent of romance, treachery, drama and, above all, colour.
