At Jacobite, it’s our people who make everything possible - from welcoming guests and skippering sailings to working behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly. Beyond their roles with us, many of our staff and crew also give their time to support important causes across the Highlands.
In this new series, Jacobite Volunteers: Our Crew Stories, we’re shining a light on the volunteer work our team are involved in and the difference they’re making in their communities.
First up, Ranald sat down with Malcolm. Alongside his role here at Jacobite, he volunteers at Culloden Battlefield, helping visitors connect with one of Scotland’s most significant historic sites. Here's his volunteering story:
Name – Malcolm
Job at Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises – Tour Guide
- Where do you volunteer?
Culloden Battlefield - Culloden | National Trust for Scotland
- How long have you been there?
This my 3rd year
- What does your volunteer role involve? Giving presentations that bring history to life!
We give four main presentations: Highland Soldier, King’s Mercy (where we put the audience on trial), Myths & Mysteries, and Johnny Lobster (the name before the Redcoats).
Additionally, we also host hands-on display tables featuring replica weapons, medical equipment, clothing and travelling gear, giving visitors a real sense of what life was like for soldiers on the road.
- What keeps you motivated to volunteer?
I have long been fascinated by Culloden and always hoped to work there one day. When I heard they were looking for volunteers, I didn’t hesitate.
With a background as a lecturer, a tour guide with Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises (since 2016), and previous military experience, I bring a wealth of knowledge and storytelling skill to the role. My passion for history and my ability to engage an audience make it a natural fit for me.
We’re incredibly proud of Malcolm, sharing his enthusiasm both on the water and up at Culloden. If there’s one area for development, it might just be the jokes… but we’ll let you be the judge!
- Are there any links between Jacobite Loch Ness Cruises and Culloden?
Aside from being in our company name, there is a wealth of Jacobite history connected to the Great Glen, Loch Ness, and particularly Urquhart Castle, all of which you’ll learn about on our cruises and tours. The Jacobite cause continued until 1746, culminating in the Battle of…Culloden.
Both of Attractions hold a Gold Green Tourism Award.
