Sea monster ‘attacks submarine’

And the filmmakers are investigating any possible links between the Loch Ness Monster and the beast that may have attacked UB-85.

Last year - writes Willie Cameron - a team of film makers and deep ocean divers came to Loch Ness to film the documentary - Monsters of the Abyss  - about a German U-Boat that sunk in the North Channel between Ireland and Scotland in the final days of the First World War.

The U-Boat captain stated that they had been attacked by a sea monster!

The film crew are Lone Wolf Productions, from Portland, Maine, headed up by Kirk Wolfinger and Jed Rauscher.

I had previously worked with Kirk and his wife, Lisa, on a major documentary 20 years ago. It was for WGBH Boston-Nova Channel and called “The Beast of Loch Ness”.

Last May, we used the Jacobite Rebel for some shots and, of course, you can have that experience, too, on one of our Loch Ness cruises.

It is an amazing story. In summary …

Richie Kohler and Evan Kovacs are deep-ocean technical divers and marine investigators on the hunt for sea monsters in the British Isles. They are drawn to the North Channel by the recent discovery of a German U-boat wreck that may be the legendary UB-85 - long-rumoured to have been attacked by a sea monster in the waning days of WW1.

Richie and Evan assemble a team of world-class divers to explore the wreck, identify it, and determine once and for all if there is any truth to the legend.>

Along the way, they travel to Scotland to meet recent eyewitnesses to the most legendary sea monster of all - the Loch Ness Monster - and to investigate any possible links between “Nessie” and the beast that may have attacked UB-85.

Mystery, myth, or monsters? You can see for yourself soon. The programme has just been aired on Animal Planet in the USA and will shortly be shown on UK television.
